Wage for Temporary Staffing and High-Paid Temporary Works

Wage for Temporary Staffing and High-Paid Temporary Works

Even though the strong perception of lifelong employment in Japan, it is a fact that fix-term employments exist widely, especially temporary work, with a Japanese name as dispatch work, increasingly utilized by both employer and employee side. Temporary work refers to work that a worker, which we are going to call temporary staffing, makes an employment contract with a staffing agency and then works at another company, which we are going to call client company, at a dispatch format. Temporary staffing is not allowed to work at the same workplace for more than three years by the revised Japanese Worker Dispatch Law.

Employers benefit from temporary staffing as a permanent recruitment can be a laborious process and quite hard to get rid of. For employees, temporary work allows them to choose industry, workplace and working hours to take a balance between work and life, and gives them freedom to gain skills in a new area where they may not have previously worked to develop CVs. You may become interested in temporary works, but how about the wage? We are going to talk about it and introduce some well paid ones.

The average wage of temporary work

According to the results of the Report of Worker Dispatching Undertakings in 2017 announced by The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the number of temporary staffing is approximately 1.76 million, and the average wage per 8 hours is 13,831 yen so that a per-hour wage can be calculated as 1729 yen. Considering working days around 240 per year (weekends, holidays are subtracted), the average annual income will be 3319,440 yen.

Of course the average wage differs from prefectures and industries. Almost 65.7% of temporary staffing are working in Kanto area including Tokyo, and temporarily working as a sales engineer gets the highest per-8-hour wage as 16,447 yen. Similar with regular employment, temporary works with high-skills tend to get higher pays.

The difference of wage compared with arbeit and regular employees

Compared with other employment styles, is temporary staffing paid more?

Between temporary staffing and arbeit

The average wage for arbeit differs a lot depending on prefectures. If working in Tokyo, an arbeit at convenience stores can earn around 1200 yen per hour, while around 800 yen or less in rural areas. Considering its average per-hour wage as 1729 yen, temporary staffing gets a higher wage than arbeit.

Between temporary staffing and regular employees

Only minor difference can be seen in the hourly wage between them two, however when comes to annual income, regular employees outstrip temporary staffing a lot in average. There are research results showing that regular employees get an average annual income as 4850,000 yen, while 3319,440 yen in the case of temporary staffing as mentioned above.

Though paid nearly the same per hour, why is the big wage gap about 153 ten thousand yen between them two? Actually besides wage, regular employees are provided with bonuses and various benefits such as reimbursement for transportation, apartment, etc. while most temporary staffing are not covered. Therefore from a total eye, regular employees get a better annual income.

Surely there are situations that temporary staffing with high skills or in key positions get paid more than their regular counterparts.
